What's New
Updates on what is happening on the Indian Railways.

6th August: The Western Railway 5th line from Andheri to Borivali has become operational. I saw the 9008 Up Jaipur - Bandra Terminus Express travelling on the 5th line between Borivali and Kandivli. The 5th line passes from behind the Kandivli EMU Carshed at Kandivli and then rejoins the existing four lines between Kandivli and Malad. Routing Mail/Express trains on the 5th line will reduce the congestion on the Up through and Down through lines of the WR during peak hours. Now the 5th line runs all the way from Mumbai Central upto Borivali.

19th June: The WR is retro-fitting its WCAM1 and WCAM2 locomotives with the new twin beam headlamps. I have seen mainly the WCAM2P locos and a couple of WCAM1 lcos sporting the newer headlamps. The twin beam headlamps are smaller as compared to the usual searchlight type headlamps. They use halogen lamps thereby offering improved visibility. All the new locomotives manufactured in India or imported have twin beam headlamps.

6th June: The Andheri - Borivali 5th line work is now complete. All systems have been installed and I have already seen quite a few WDS4, WDM2 locomotives plying on the track. Don't know whether electric locos ply or not. Will keep updating as soon as I observe. This part of the 5th line hasn't been "Officially" inaugurated though.

3rd June: There are now atleast 4-5 pairs of the AC/DC dual voltage EMUs running on the Western Railway. These EMUs are extremely energy efficient with 3-phase AC induction motors which do not need a continuous supply of power unlike the ordinary DC motors. Instead they need power only in short bursts. Besides, these EMUs also have re-generative braking which is a great concept. The energy which is released while braking is converted to electricity and is fed back to the overhead supply. This means that these EMUs consume only a fraction of the power consumed by ordinary DC EMUs.
