| History of the Indian Railways The first train on Indian soil ran between Mumbai and Thane on April 16th 1853. The train had 14 coaches and was hauled by 3 steam locomotives. There were 400 passengers on the train and the 21 mile journey took an hour and fifteen minutes. This train was the first passenger service in India on the Great Indian Peninsular Raiway(G.I.P.R) which is known today as the Central Railway(CR). This line was later extended upto Kalyan In 1855, the Bombay Baroda & Central India Railway(BB&CI) was formed with a line from Mumbai to Surat. The BB&CI is now known as the Western Railway(WR). |
